There is no definate answer. Shadow is the ultimate life form created by Professor Gerald on Space Colony ARK over 50 years ago, however.

Created by Black Doom and Professer Gerald Robotnik: current position Having being brainwashed by amesia remembers nothing but shadow the hedgehog and a horrifying memory of a GUN soldier shooting a girl named Maria. Now hunting for his past so he is getting all 7 chaos emeralds.
Past:50 years ago in a lab on the space colony ARK Pro. Gerald and black doom created the ultimate life form aka shadow the hedgehog. It was supposed to be for the benefit of mankind. Then Maria and Shadow became like brothers and sister. Until Geralds experimts went on rampage and went horribly wrong Maria asked shadow to help them he did then they confronted GUN soldiers Maria was going to shoot shadow to earth and Maria died.
